Did you purchase a TV antenna for your home? Do you know the full installation process? You may set the antenna in the right direction. But besides this, you also need to ground the TV antenna to avoid any circumstances. National Electrical Code (NEC) requires every TV antenna to be grounded to keep yourself safe.
Why? Because a simple light strike on the antenna can cause a fire at your home. So, you should have the proper knowledge of TV antenna grounding.
Though the grounding process may need some expert help, you can also do it with the proper steps. In this article, I am going to discuss how you can do it like a pro.
What is Antenna Grounding
If you are thinking grounding is essential to get a good picture quality, you are wrong. You can enjoy all the channels without any interruption even when the antenna is not grounded. But this is actually essential for your own safety.
Grounding the antenna means, make a connection between the TV antenna and the earth. So, whenever light strikes, the antenna can pass the electricity to the ground. It will ensure the safety of your home.
What Do You Need to Ground a TV Antenna
You don’t need so many things to ground the antenna. You just need the grounding cable which you can purchase from online or from the local stores. Based on the height of the antenna, the amount of the grounding cable will vary. Pick the high-quality cable to avoid any issues.
Mount Your TV Antenna
Before you ground the TV antenna, it is essential to mount the antenna properly. Make sure you are installing the antenna in a place where it will get enough support to stay in the right place. For this, find out the right direction where you want to aim the antenna.
Now use the provided mounting hardware for the installation. Mount your TV antenna to the rooftop or to the side wall of your home. This will give enough support to keep it in the right place. Each antenna comes with the mounting instruction. So follow the rules and do it accordingly.
Find the Service Grounding Conductor (Wire)
In most of the case, you will find it in your basement. There will be an electrical panel and you will find a solid copper wire that goes from the electrical panel through the wall to the outside. You need to connect one side of the grounding wire to the antenna and the other side to the grounding conductor.
Now Ground the Antenna
Remember that you need to ground the antenna and the mast both. Some people may tell you that the mast is not required to ground. But for the best safety, it is essential. Because grounding the antenna doesn’t mean the mast is also grounded. A mast is made of metal and it can cause serious issues if light strikes on it.
To ground a mast, you need to find the ground screw on it. Attach a ground screw on it and attach the ground wire. If the screw is not available in the mast, you need to make a hole on it to attach a screw for the cable. Now connect the other part of the wire to the grounding cable.
Now you need to ground the coax cable. For this, follow the same method as mentioned above for the mast. For this, you can use a grounding block. There are various types of grounding blocks for coax cable which are available both in online and local shops.
If you have done the whole process according to the instruction, now you have secured the TV antenna. But let me clear one thing, though you have grounded the antenna, it doesn’t mean light won’t strike the antenna. It can happen and the purpose of grounding just stays careful as much as you can.
During the whole process, you need to maintain some essential steps. First of all, if the mast has ay painted or it is badly rusted, you should use duct tape to cover it. Also, use staples or zip=screw wire clamp to keep the wire attached with the side walls of your house.
Though I have described the whole process, still you may want to ask for expert help. If you are not comfortable with this kind of things and you don’t know which the grounding cable is and how to do each step, a professional is recommended.
