If you want to enjoy the local channels for free, an HDTV antenna can be the best option. But, only purchasing the best product is not enough. You have to install it properly to get a high definition view. If it is an indoor TV antenna, less effort required for the installation. In case of outdoor antenna, you need to follow the following rules.
During the installation process, there will be a thought in mind, where to point the antenna? Well, for the best performance from a TV antenna, it should be pointed in the right direction. An incorrectly aligned or pointed antenna may disrupt the picture quality. Though it seems easy to install the TV antenna, it can be tough for a single directional antenna.
But, you don’t have to be worried much. Here I am going to share the TV antenna pointing guide which will help you to get the optimized performance.
The Initial Step
At the very beginning of the installation process, you need to find out where is the TV transmitter tower. If the roof of your home is high enough, you can look for the tower from there. If you become successful in this step and get the tower location, simply point the TV antenna to the direction of the tower. You can use a TV station locator for antenna.
In this step, you may need to spend some dedicated time to ensure the perfect high definition channels. If you find it is difficult to find the tower from your rooftop or you don’t have a rooftop, there is an easy way. Just look for another TV antenna in your neighbor’s building. Identify the direction and go for the same point.
Use the Smartphone App
It is a common issue that the transmitter is not visible from your location. This can happen for different reasons. Especially, in the rural areas, it is not that easy to find the proper direction. But, a smartphone app can overcome the issue.
Just search for the antenna point app in play store or iTunes according to your device, and you will get a bunch of applications. Apps are available for both Android and iOs. These apps are designed to give you the answer for which way to point the TV antenna.
Go for the apps which have more positive feedback and 5-star ratings. Install it and the app will show you the list of transmitting stations. You just have to simply use the phone orientation to find the location of a particular serving station. Some apps also have the signal strength feature.
Signal Strength Meter
You may get the location of the transmitter and know how to point antenna, but are you sure that you are getting the best performance? Probably you will get better performance with a minor change. In this point, you will feel you need something to measure the strength of the signal and the solution is the strength meter.
The best part of a strength meter is, it will help you to identify if the TV antenna is faulty. So, get the best strength meter and start using it. A digital field signal strength meter will have some different modes. These are for ensuring the best resolution. The obvious one is the signal strength display. The feature Modulation Error Ratio (MER) is the standard one for measuring quality. When you are getting an MER of 25db or better, it indicates a better quality signal. The higher the better.
However, don’t go for the cheap products which may not give you the actual data.
The Polarization of the Antenna
When it is about antenna pointing direction, polarization plays an important role. Most of the TV antennas are horizontally polarized and the elements of the antenna are the same, in some cases, you will find a TV antenna with vertical polarization. Make sure that you are not aiming polarization 90° out which will lose the signal.
Some Other Considerations to have a better resolution
Only the best TV antenna can’t ensure the best performance. There are so many other factors that may play important role to provide good quality picture. You should check the coverage capacity. If the TV station is in a long distance, some antenna may not give the best performance.
You also have to use a good quality antenna cable. However, if you are using a Wi-Fi or wireless antenna, there will be no such issues. But in case of wired antenna, the signal will be weak with low-quality cables.
Avoid cheap strength meter and TV meter. Some televisions may have an internal meter to measure the signal. But believe me, in most of the cases it won’t show you the actual result. So, my suggestion is, don’t rely on TV meter.
Try to keep some distance between you and the TV antenna. Staying closure to the antenna may interrupt the performance.
Make slight changes once you have pointed the antennal. Go for the adjustment which is providing the best resolution.
